The Importance of Humidity in Mushroom Cultivation

Mushrooms are more than 90% water, making humidity one of the most important factors for successful cultivation. Even small fluctuations in humidity can lead to cracked caps, reduced yield, discoloration, and an increased risk of disease. In this article, we’ll explain why humidity control is essential for commercial mushroom production and how Dry Fog humidification helps create optimal growing conditions.

Signs your humidity level is too low:

Recommended humidity levels for the different stages of the mushroom growing cycle

1: Colonization

During the mushroom colonization (the incubation phase), the ideal ambient relative humidity depends on the system. If it is a bag or bottle cultivation system, a relative humidity level between 60–75% RH in the growing room is usually sufficient to prevent excessive drying of the bags or equipment. If it is an open-bed system a higher room humidity of around 80–90% RH helps prevent the substrate surface from drying out.

2: Pinning

The pinning phase is one of the most humidity-sensitive stages in mushroom cultivation and requires a very high relative humidity level between 85-95%. During the pinning stage, the high humidity helps to encourage the formation of a large number of pins, prevent tiny pins from drying out, promote uniform mushroom development, reduce cracking and deformation and improve overall yield.

3: Fruiting

During the fruiting stage, mushrooms require slightly lower humidity than during pinning. We recommend a relative humidity level between 85-93%. This helps to produce larger, well-shaped mushrooms, prevent excessive moisture loss and weight reduction and improve cap appearance and texture.

4: Harvest

The ideal humidity in a mushroom harvest room is slightly lower than in the fruiting room and can be reduced to around 80-90% RH. This will help to reduce moisture loss and weight loss after harvest, preserve firmness and freshness and to improve shelf life and marketable quality.

5: Storage

Due to the high water content in mushrooms, they also require a high level of humidity during storage to prevent them from losing moisture. We generally recommend a RH level around 85-95%. It is also important to store the mushrooms in a cool room around 0–4°C.

Different humidity levels

Different species of mushrooms have different humidity requirements, but in general, the ideal humidity level for mushroom cultivation is between 85% and 95%. To maintain this level of humidity, growers may use various methods such as misting, watering, or placing a humidifier in the growing area. It is important to monitor humidity levels regularly and make adjustments as needed to ensure optimal growing conditions.

There are many other factors that can affect mushroom cultivation, including temperature, lighting, substrate, and ventilation. It is important to have a good understanding of all of these factors in order to successfully grow mushrooms.
