Odor control in cannabis cultivation

The strong smell of cannabis

Lately, there has been an increase in complaints regarding cannabis air pollution from surrounding neighbours to larger farms. Cannabis plants produces many strong and distinctive odors throughout their growing process which can cause odor issues for growers as well as for people in the vicinity. This problem can partly be solved by air ventilation and by frequently spraying odor neutralization agents.

Why does cannabis cultivation smell?

The main reason that cannabis cultivation smell, is due to the production of terpenes and volatile sulfur compounds. There are over 200 different types of terpenes in cannabis, each with its own scent. The main terpenes responsible for the strongest odor particles are Myrcene, Limonene, Pirene and Caryophyllene. Terpenes are however very beneficial to the cannabis plant itself as it helps to deters pests and other benefits such as regulating the plant’s temperature and contribute to its immune system.

At what growing stage does cannabis cause the strongest odor?

Cannabis plants release the strongest odor when they start to grow buds. At this stage, the cannabis terpenes are peaking and release a lot of odor particles which can travel very far. At the drying stage, the cannabis plants still release a strong odor, although a bit less than in the flowering stage.

How can you reduce cannabis odor particles?

1: Air filtration

To prevent odor in cannabis production, the most effective and widely used method is activated carbon filtration combined with an exhaust fan.   Activated carbon has the ability to capture odor-causing particles. When air passes through the filter, the carbon will absorb the cannabis terpenes responsible for the strong odor. The exhaust fan will ensure that the odor causing particles leave the facility. However, this method will not manage to capture all odor particles and needs frequent maintenance, which is why it’s recommended to combine it with odor neutralizing spraying.

2: Odor neutralizing spraying

Odor neutralizing spraying can bind odor particles and neutralize the smell before it reaches the carbon filter and exhaust fan.  It is important to spray odor neutralizers and not deodorizers, which can potentially harm the quality of the cannabis.  Our AKIMist® SETOJet is ideal for odor neutralizing due to its tiny droplet size and anti-clogging design.
