Humidity control for insect farming

Insect farming is becoming increasingly popular as a future alternative to meat. Insects like crickets, mealworms, and black soldier flies, are commonly raised for their use as food, animal feed, and other applications. Humidity control is an important factor for succeding in insect farming because insects generally trive in high humidity areas.

It is important to keep the humidity levels constant in order to prevent stress, poor growth, and increased susceptibility to diseases in the insects.

Difference per species

Crickets generally develop best in a humidity level between 50 to 70%.

Mealworms enjoy a little bit lower humidity level between 50-60% and should not surpass 70%.

For soldier flies, on the other hand, humidity levels should be kept between 60-70% and rather higher than lower.

Different stages of development

Insect lifecycles typically consist of various stages, including eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. The humidity requirements may differ among these stages.

For example, the larval stage of mealworms typically requires higher humidity levels than the adult stage.

Energy Efficiency

Efficient humidification systems can help improve energy efficiency in insect farming facilities. By maintaining the right humidity levels, growers can avoid energy waste associated with excessive cooling or heating to compensate for fluctuations in humidity.
