The vast majority of industrial companies use compressed air for application like surface drying or cleaning. Compressed air is a form of energy storage due to its ability to perform when the air is decompressed. The production of compressed air is mostly generated by electrical energy through a compressor.

Due to the large amount of electrical energy necessary to produce compressed air, it is important to study how to reduce its energy consumption.

Where is the energy consumption allocated when producing compressed air?

 

In the industry, more than 10% of the electricity consumed goes to the production of compressed air, which varies according to the sector, as in some cases it can reach up to 30% of the electrical energy used.

After assimilating the set of costs of a compressed air system during its first 10 years of operation, it is obtained that 73% comes from the electric energy necessary for its operation. The rest of costs include the initial investment, maintenance and costs of installation.

  • Leakage control

There are different types of leaks in a facility, the best way to avoid them is to practice frequent maintenance. It is considered “an installation in good condition” when the leaks imply 10% of the production.

  • Control of compressor air intake

For a better performance of the compressor, it is convenient that the sucked air is clean and cold. Since the air increases in specific volume with the temperature, the colder it is, the more air will fit in the compressor, thus improving its performance.

  • Recovery of thermal energy

Because the compression process produces heat, it can be extracted by a cooling circuit and reused for other process.

  • Inefficient applications
